Official 2020 AP Stats Exam College Board Lesson #9 Collecting Data Sampling and Experiments 4_16_2020
Hi All!
That was a nice lesson from Brendan Murphy! Here are my take-aways and teacher comments:
Brief Reminders:
- Lessons are here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEhA45iE314&list=PLoGgviqq4845u-QDW3bikMhC4uQsuYDpy&index=17
- Lessons: April 6-10: Units 6-7 taught first because many schools either didn’t get to these entirely or at all (we did get through most of this); April 13-May 1: Units 1-5
- AP Stats Exam Friday May 22 from 2-2:45 EST
- All resources available at Statsmedic.com/youtube
- If you need a device take the Exam go to cb.org/tech
Last night’s homework:
- There are no multiple questions on the 2020 AP Stats Exam, so multiple choice test taking strategies does not apply
Introduction:
- Reminder that correlation does NOT mean causation
- Reminder of the sampling methods: SRS, stratified, cluster, and systematic
- Reminder of the well-designed experiment characteristics a-d
Example #1--1999 AP Exam FRQ #3 “apple a day”:
- a) nice reminder of how an experiment imposes a treatment
- b) Answer BOTH parts of this question. Don’t give more than one answer if asked for only one (“an”) since the grader will pick the “weakest” answer of those for your choice☹
- c) Reminder that cause and effect is only for experimental studies
Example #2—2002 AP Exam Multiple Choice #2 “waterproofing boots”:
- a) nice review of an experimental design diagram, but reminder that the paragraph is what’s needed. In class we used the random number generator (rng) or table of random digits (tord) for our selection process, but the hat concept is fine too😊
- b) nice “double blind” explanation/review
Example #4 “Floors on an Apartment Building” – 2011 AP Exam FRQ #3
- We covered this EXACT question in class 😊. Watch how he explains it for comparison.
Example #5 “Alzheimer’s & smoking” – 2016 AP Exam FRQ #3
- We covered this EXACT question in class 😊. Watch how he explains it for comparison.
If you can, do the homework on compact dics (CDs) (or watch the recoding at you leisure) and follow along as we learn.
As always please email me with questions, comments, thoughts.
Take care!
