Official 2020 AP Stats Exam College Board Lesson #2 Significance Tests for Proportions (SPDC) 4_7_2020

Hi All!

That was a great lesson from Brendan Murphy!  Here are my take-aways and teacher comments:

Brief Reminders:

Last night’s homework:

  • You can use 2nd àVars 3: InvNorm (0.10/2) MAKE IT POSITIVE to get z* = 1.64 instead of the Z-Table as we did in class
  • You can use q-hat instead of 1-p-hat in the formula if you write it

B. Murphy’s explanation/intro:

  • H0: p1 = p2  is the same as saying H0: p1 - p2 = 0  if you like this better because it reminds you more of the idea of that the null hypothesis is the statement of no difference (difference equals zero)

Example 1 “Housing on campus” performing a 1 proportion significance test (4 step SPDC process) TPS section 9-2

  • The name of the procedure is what we call the Inference Method (IM) 1 Prop Z-Test
  • We remember the conditions by using the acronym Random Normal Independence (RNI)
  • You can state something like we will assume that there are at least 4810 (300x10) university grad students in the population as your Independence step as we do in class
  • You can use q-hat instead of 1-p-hat in the formula if you write it
  • You can report all of the data from your calculator function Stat à Test  5: 1 Prop Z-Test  in the Do step:  Notice that he clearly states that is what is needed 😊

Example 2 “TV commercials promoting new products” performing a 2 proportions significance test (4 step SPDC process) TPS section 10-1

  • The name of the procedure is what we call the Inference Method (IM) 2 Prop Z-Test
  • We remember the conditions by using the acronym Random Normal Independence (RNI)
  • You can state something like we will assume that there are at least 10200 and 10090 in the population for both years as your Independence step as we do in class
  • You can use q-hat instead of 1-p-hat in the formula if you write it
  • You can report all of the data from your calculator function Stat à Test  6: 2 Prop Z-Test  in the Do step:  Notice that he clearly states that is what is needed 😊

If you can, do the homework each day (or watch the recoding at you leisure) and follow along as we learn.

As always please email me with questions, comments, thoughts.

Take care!
